Cusumbur slum!/ Ο γιός μας!

OK! I lied!!
I said in a previous post that we have no children...well,we do have a son! In Delhi. In one of the city's slums, hidden behind the posh villas and the shopping malls of the capital:
Cusumbur.

Vedani....our little boy made it to public school yea!!!

Even the taxi driver in Delhi didn't know where the slum was,but luckily we had the mobile of one of the people working to improve the lives of the lower caste Indians and especially women and children.
Cusumbur is one of the many slums in Delhi.
People here are poor farmers immigrating from other parts of India, like Bengal. They come to the capital to find jobs, but speaking a completely different dialect/language it is impossible for them to do anything better than clean houses -for the women (they earn 25 euros a month!!!) -or rummage through the landfill garbage mounts for men and children.
Children as old as 3 years work in the garbage...
And that's the most important of tasks:
Get the children out of the garbage mounts and into the school system.

I have to make it clear, we don't do "charity"! But this program, sponsored by ActionAid in Greece, is the kind that doesn't give people fish.It teaches them how to catch them.
We "adopted" Vedani by mail and some weeks later we received his picture and a drawing made by him. Well...we were in tears...
Some years later, when planning another trip to India (the no-visa-go-to-Nepal one) we made a point to visit Cusumbur and out little boy there.

Easier said than done. In Cusumbur, ActionAid supports a local group BVD,whose members include doctors and teachers.
The volunteers from "Bal Vikas Dhara" have first to convince parents to send their children to the preparatory classes in the slum, and then teach the children -who speak a totally different dialect than the Delhi one-to read and write.
Then and only then can these children start attending the normal classes in the nearest public school and so have a chance to progress in their lives.

Once a day a water tanker comes to Cusumbur
and everyone scrambles to get the daily supply of water
BVD also has programs to empower the community's women and to organize life in the slum. Working women have access to legal advise and help, they discuss their problems in groups, they tale turns keeping the slum as clean as possible.Women are at the fore front of all programs.

Before visiting Cusumbur we had been discussing what present we should buy for our boy.But-and I loved the reasoning of it-we were told that it was against BVD policy to give presents to just one child. So we bought colored crayons, candy and balloons for all the children in the preparatory school.

Walking through a slum was a shock. Classes were held in a room build of mud. No window. But when the older ones stood in the front and repeated for us their lesson/poem/calculus their faces were shining!
Our little boy, already wearing the public school uniform, counted to 50 in English!!!!
As instructed,we avoided paying too much attention to him, so as not to make other children feel less appreciated :] Before leaving we wanted to leave the BVD a donation, but they refused. The monthly contribution we payed through ActionAid for the community work was enough they said...Amazing people!!

I spend the next few days in Delhi explaining to my husband again and again why we shouldn't ...kidnap Vedana and half a dozen other kids from Cusumbur and bring them home with us lol
Since then Vedana has begun high school,he is learning English and is good at math -we get a report from his teacher twice a year ;)-many more slum children learn to read and write thanks to ActionAid and BVD.

Mahabharata/Μαχαμπχάρατα

Bhagavat Gita
Posting about India and chating with Janet and other friends, I remembered the first time I got hooked by something of Indian origin. And it was love at first sight.
It was around 1990 that Greek TV aired the epic mini series of Peter Brook's stage play "Mahabharata".
I had no idea what it was, or where it came from, but it hit me like a truck :A wonderful tale, with stories within stories, heroes, romance, humor, drama, philosophy...6 hours of absolut fun.

I followed the turbulent story of the Pandava brothers and reached the last scene, where the oldest one, Yudhisthira, climbs the highest peak of the Hymalayas searching for the entrance to heaven.
While climbing behind him, his wife and his 4 brothers have fallen to their deaths and only an ugly, mangy stray dog is left following him through the snow...
God Indra opens the door to him, but says "Heaven is no place for dogs. Leave it behind and enter". And...yes, you've guessed it, Yudhisthira refuses to abandon the dog!!!!!!- which is in reality his divine father, the God of Justice.
No wonder I fell in love with the whole of Mahabharata!

Mahabharata and Ramayana are the most important Sanskrit epics of ancient India. They are the Odyssey and Iliad of the East.
Like Homers epic tales of Gods and heroes,Mahabharata was originally meant to be narrated/recited by heart. It was written down during the 4th century AD, but it's origins go back to at least 900 BC Some estimate that it recounts an epic dynastic conflict as old as 2.000 BC, but nobody can be sure about it.
Let's say it is very very old.
And very very long, 100.000 verses.

The mastery and talent of British theatre director Peter Brook-now 86 years old!!- is that he kept the essence of the epic while filming a stage performance.
He chose actors from all over the world,so he would stress the common human message and gave it a rather Shakespearean aroma. So it was less "exotic" and "alien" to Westerners.

Yudhisthira answers the lake's questions.

In the heart of Mahabharata is the "Song of the Beloved" one of the most holy scripts in Hinduism, considered to be of divine inspiration. It is a stunning moment between two armies bend on destroying each other.

The epic moment of revelation in Bhagavat Gita
compressed by Peter Brook into 9 minutes. The original text has 700 verses.

I was thrilled some months ago to discover scenes from the play in youtube!!! There is even the first 1h 38 min of the film!!!! The actors speak English, so I will cope with the Spanish/Italian subtitles ;P

Krishna driving Arjuna's chariot to battle. There is nothing more intergrated in Indian culture as Mahabharata and Ramayana.
The two epics have spread throughout Asia. They are played in  the shadow theatre in Indonesia, danced in Bali and Kerala, painted in Thailand and Taiwan. They have been turned into countless films,TV series, comic strips,books,statues...the heroes are everywhere.
Children in India grow up reading stories about Arjuna, the best archer in the world and Bhima, his strong but rather naive brother and of course marvel at the marriage of beautiful Drahupadi to all 5 of the Pandavas.

A figure of Indonesian shadow theatre,
Sitta the beloved of Rama, heroin of Ramayana.

Most recently, Mahabharata was reproduced for the Indian TV in 2008. The series flopped and I guess you can see why...too much oiled muscles and an.... emmmm....too sexy-come-and-get-me Drahupadi lol

Kerala -"God's own Land"- is a fascinating place. After the cool tea hills of Thekaddy, we had the chance to explore the famous Backwaters.
Along the Malabar coastline of Kerala, lakes, rivers coming down from the Western Ghats and the sea have created a maze of canals, lagoons and small patches of reclaimed land.
More then 900 Km of waterways, green and full of life. And the best way to experience the Backwaters is to embark on a houseboat.

Houseboats -ketuvallams-are made of wood and bamboo and were once used to transport rice and other grains through the canals. Now,more than 2.000 of them have been transformed into houses, with a generator, WC,shower, one or two bedrooms and a nice outdoor sitting and dinning area.

Apart from being the name of this splendit bird, "Kingfisher" is one of the best Indian beers.
Μια η το πολύ δύο μέρες είναι αρκετές για τα Backwaters.Τώρα τι μ' έπιασε την άπληστη,να κλείσω το "κετουβαλάμ" γιά τρείς;;

One or two days should be enough to see the Backwaters, but we stayed there for 3. (I'm usually too greedy with experiencing something,I don't want to go back home and haven't seen enough). The houseboat the Indian travel agent reserved for us was a bit small-the bedroom was claustrophobic to be honest-but the outdoor area was nice.
And the Backwaters were magical!

Cormorans and Kingfishers and various species of birds inhabit the Backwaters.

On the houseboat there were the pilot and a cook-the kitchen being at the back of the boat. So, we were just lazying in the outdoor area while having breakfast or lunch. At dusk the boat would moor somewhere, turn the generators on and dinner would be cooked and eaten :)
Both men were extremely discreet and civil. And I'm happy to report that the cook was very competent.
I couldn't resist taking the picture of this little Kerala beauty.Isn't she a cute little doll  ? :]

Kerala is a strange place in more ways than one. For instance its the only place I know of,where it is not permitted to smoke out in the streets.
The local government is in the hands of the communist party for the last 50 years. Kerala has a stunning 97% literacy and more Christians than all other states of India put together.
It is also home to the oldest Jewish Synagogue in India.

Saint Thomas, the one who doubted that Christ has risen, was the first to build a church in Kerala,or so the legend has it.
The fact is that missionaries of all denominations, found favor in the eyes of the lower castes of India mainly farmers and "untouchables". Missionary/Christian schools have been offering education to lower caste children for generations.

Slowly gliding across the canals has an almost hypnotic quality.
Everywhere there is greenery and lushness, water and more water. It is not unusual to rain heavily for some time and then,as the sun shines again, the haze of moisture engulfs everything.

Everyday life unfolds near the water. Children splashing and laughing, their mothers near by washing clothes or bathing their younger ones...people taking their bath in the canal...other houseboats or smaller canoes passing us by.

:]

We disembarked full of impressions. The driver was waiting to take us further south, to Kovallam-the new Goa-and to Cape Kumari, the southernmost edge of India.

"Mother India"/Καρδιά μου καημένη

This post should have the subtitle: Saved by a song !:)

Some years ago, we embarked on our second trip to India. We took a Lufhansa flight from Frankfurt to Delhi.
Just before boarding the plane, my husband said: Look! the Dalai Lama! And sure enough there he was, and for the 8,5 hours of the flight he was sitting in the seat right behind me.

I have read some of his excellent books and have tonnes of respect for him. During the flight I thought :If I could ask him for just one advise, what would it be? Hmm...It would be how to control my impatience and anger. I didn't speak to him, of course.
Little did I know the answer was already coming my way ;)

Ακριβώς στην πίσω θεση κάθισε ο Δαλάϊ Λάμα. Οχτώμιση ώρες σκεφτόμουνα κάθε τόσο: Πές ότι τολμάς να γυρίσεις να του μιλήσεις, τι θα ρώταγες;

A ceremony taking place in Swayambhunath Stupa, the holiest Buddhist temple in Kathmandu

It was dawn when we landed in Delhi and realized WE HAD NO VISAS!!! A travel agent took care of the formalities on our first trip so we foolishly thought visas are optained at the airport ,like in so many other countries.
NOPE. NO WAY!We should have gotten a visa from an Indian empassy, period. So, we found ourselves ready to be DEPORTED! and send back to Frankfurt ASAP.

I kept my cool, dont ask me how, and started calmly chatting with the chief of the customs in New Delhi airport, Mr.Dhama over a cup of tea.
I mentioned the love Greek people have for Indian movie songs (its true) and to prove it, I sang for him-with Greek verses-a song from the most popular ever Indian movie "Mother India"

The movie, staring the legendary Nargis, was nominated for Foreign Language Best Film Oscar in 1957, was a big succses in Greece and the main song was and stil is very well known and sung here.

Mr.Dhama got emotional and sung along with me. The scene was surreal: In New Delhi airport a desperate Greek and an Indian customs officer singing together :)
After some more Indian/greek songs Mr.Dama offered us a way out: we would board the next flight to Nepal-just two hours is the duration of the flight-stay a couple of days in Katmandu, get the visa from the Indian empassy there, then return to Delhi.

The fountain of Peace at the base of the  Stupa.

God bless him-and Lord Krishna too :)
A few hours later we had our first glimse of the Himalayas bathed in the morning sun...
Awesome!!!!!!!!

Women preparing the offerings for the puja (the ceremony)
We sent Mr. Dhama a beautiful table book from Athens.
Next year he was courteous enough to call us with congratulations, when the Greek national Football team won the European Championship :)

/salute Mr. Dhama
/respect and thanks for the answer Your Holiness

Kerala's Pepper

It was while traveling in Kerala, a State at India's southernmost tip that I made the acquaintance of a pepper bush.
I' m a reasonably good cook and I love spices. But it never crossed my mind to look up pepper's origins or at least see what the plant looks like.

Among the tea plantations tall, branchless trees offer pepper climbers support

So it came as a wonderful surprise to see the plant in a tea and spice plantation up in the cool misty hills of Thekkady.
I felt like a city kid ,who believes chickens have four legs, because the supermarket package contains four drums and then sees for the first time a real live chicken...
The wonder of it!! :)

These little green berries is the pepper we use. Depending on the way it is processed it becomes black, green, white or red.

Pepper bush only grows in a 20 degrees zone around the Equator. The closer to it, the hotter the flavor.
When the berries ripen, they are harvested, sun dried, an enzyme makes its magic and they become black pepper. Take the husk off before drying and you have white pepper.
If the berries are harvested a little before ripening and are not dried,  you get the green pepper corns.
Keep the berries on the branch, cut the branch and let them ripen there and they turn into red pepper.

Tea bushes sparkle on the slopes of Western Ghatts, where Thekkady and several other hill posts are located.

India is pepper's birthplace and produces 50% of the planet's supply. Pepper was and still is the "King of Spices". Once upon a time,it was worth it's weight in gold, it was worth much more than gold to be precise.

Workers-mainly women- from the neighboring State of Tamil Nandu harvest the tea bushes, plucking only the freshest of the new leaves. They and their families live in the small houses you see beyond the path.

As sworn coffee lovers, both me and my husband didn't pay much attention during the tour of the tea plant, where the leaves are dried, fermented, made into powder and packed.
But we enjoyed the tea nevertheless

In Thekkady if you need a banana you just go for a short walk outside

Along with pepper there were vanilla plants, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, cardamon, in short all kinds of wonderful aromatic spices. We had to buy ourselves an-otherwise not really needed-large suitcase, just to stuff it with kilos of exciting spices for us and for friends/relatives.

Tourists who reach Thekkady are mainly Indians taking a break from the heat down the coast and the plains  and visiting  the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. We spend three nights at Taj Garden Retreat, which is quite decent.
I slept feeling really safe, as this majestic guy-the hotel's mascot-was patrolling the grounds
