The capital of Andros, Chora, build to the eastern side of the island.

The springs of Dionysus at Menites.
I don't really know why we have never thought of visiting Andros, the northernmost of the Cyclades. And a week ago we have been soooo pleasantly surprised to discover an island like no other!
Yes, Andros has the classical Aegean coastline, rocky to the East and full of beautiful sandy beaches to the West. The island has, of course, the usual barren, windswept hills, where herds of goats allow only very tough low vegetation to survive, BUT
in the heart of Andros there are mountains full of springs, creeks, small waterfalls and all the greenery the other Cyclades lack!!!

Waterfalls cascading over Palaiopoli, the iron age capital of the island, now under the sea.

More than 50 picturesque villages are perched on the slopes of no less than 5 mountains-the tallest peak is 1003 m-and between them strategically planted cypresses "break down" the fury of the winds and provide shelter to groves of olive trees, oranges,

lemons, almond trees, grapes and flowers. My all time Spring favorite, the lilac bush, thrives with all this lovely water and coolness.

Easter has passed and we have survived! Yipiiiiiii!!!

Just across the street from our hotel, well hallo guys!

Stenies, just 5 Km from Chora,a head-village with an excellent view.
In the narrow streets of Palaiopolis village to the West of Andros, everything is whitewashed in the classic Cyclades tradition.

The people here,as in the whole of the Aegean region, have used the most common of materials: the crystalline limestone found everywhere. They perfected the art of balancing the stones without mortar to build boundaries, terraces to prevent erosion, huts to shelter herds and herdsmen and "pigeon towers" for...yes...their prized pigeon flocks.

Late afternoon ,the wind comes from the South bringing humidity and low clouds. The stone pigeon tower stands alone.
Just two hours by ship from the harbor of Rafina-a few Km from Athens' airport-Andros stood apart from the rest of the Cyclades for decades. It's men traditionaly traveled the seven seas, sending money back home. So, Andros never really had to go after the tourist industry. Most of the visitors are Greeks, although some travellers have already discovered and fallen in love with the beaches and the well kept trekking paths. There are excellent places to stay near the sea, but if you want to enjoy the green heart of Andros, choose one of the new small hotels in or around Chora. Oh, and visit the island during the peaceful and cool season, that is Spring or Fall.
View from our veranda at Armonia Resort in Menites, towards Chora and the sea.Στη βεράντα μας, στο Αρμονια Resort, στις Μενητες, αγναντεύουμε τη Χώρα.

Kifissos: a modest river god

Earlier this winter our friend Thanasis-an interpid "hunter" of the most forgotten places on the map of Greece-took us for a trip to locate the springs of Kifisos river,on the slopes of Parnassus mounain.

Parnassus's most visited site is the imposing and unforgetable Oracle of Delphi, not to mention the ski resort and the night life in Arahova village.
But the tiny spring of the god/river on the shady side of the mountain, lost somewhere between the rocks and a muddy, slipery road, had been dressed in impressive winter colors and for a moment there was real magic in the air!

The river, though modest at the start, has a length of almost 60 Km and has been watering the fertile plains of Thebes for millenia. "Biotikos" Kifisos -to distinguish from his brother of the same name in Athens, which is now a fast tack motorway...sigh*-never reaches the sea. His waters, whatever is left after the farmers take their share, goes into Athens's watering system.
Near the springs ,up a slipery hill are boulders left from the walls of the ancient city of Lilaia.

Lilaia was a mighty city some 4.000 years ago, strong enough to send ships and warriors to fight in the Troyan war, as mentioned by Homer. Although, judging by the ruins, I' not sure what the ancients meant by mighty...whatever :)

As in most places, the stone blocks from the ancient buildings had been used for the construction of the first Christian churches. Saint Mary the Compassionate-dated around the 7th century a.D- lies in ruins near the springs. The ministery of Culture sign hasn't been popular with the local hunters...

Parnassus had just been sprinkled by the first snows,Thanasis knew a fine taverna down the other side of the mountain and there is nothing I love more than finishing a nice day trip with friends around a table !

Havana Vieja!/Παλιά Αβάνα

Cuba is beautiful not just because it is another lush tropical island with the usual warm blue seas and exotic palm trees.
Cuba is beautiful because it's people are beautiful.

Rarely have I met such stoically happy, life-is-sort-let's-have-a-party kind of people.(Strangely, the poorer the country, the more smiling persons one meets in the streets). And Cuba is very poor after 50 years of a strict international embargo, which smells peculiarly of vindictiveness...
Very poor, but with her dignity unscratched .And she still has managed to have one of the best public health systems in the world-Cuba is in fact "exporting" doctors and medical research to the third world and patends new medicines to Canadian pharmaceutical firms.

A warm afternoon in Old Havana, the perfect time for a lazy stroll. The streets are almost empty, not many Cubans can afford a car and the rare petrol it needs to roll. Cubans are very proud of the old American cars left behind after the revolution. They can't afford spare parts (I don't know if spare parts even exist for such old models) so when the old ones break down, Cubans use their ingenuity to fix them, often creating hybrids half a Cadillac half a Pontiac with a VW middle part :)
Havana was founded in 1513 by the Spaniards. It is now home to more than 2million people. The old city is a mixture of Baroque and neoclassical buildings, museums, churches, palaces, squares and parks.

In a closed square of Old colonial Havana, lovingly restored by UNESCO, after being added to the world heritage sites, a group of young artists rehearse their dance with drums and smiling faces. We met them later that night in stilts, with medieval costumes giving a free performance in another square.

Yet, outside the center of the old city, the beautiful neoclassic houses are crumbling in disrepair. The neighborhood committees are doing their best to at least keep all streets and squares clean and garbage free. But spare cash for taking care of the houses they have not.
Don't get me wrong. There is poverty and discontent with the lack of most comforts-plain paper is one of the rarest items in Cuba- but nobody is left hungry. Yes there is prostitution, but show me any place on earth where there isn't someone ready to pay for sex.
Education and health care are of the highest quality and tourism is blooming since the country decided to open it's borders to visitors.

The mid-day heat is lessening,a cool breeze warns of an incoming downpour, usual in tropical climates. In the sidewalks, neighbors meet and chat. Someone is selling flowers. Dogs and children find the opportunity to roam free and play. Surprisingly, alot of Cubans have a pet dog, well taken care of ...I guess they must have very good veterinarians as well as human doctors:)

Tucked in a poor neighborhood a Santeria "temple" all painted with strange symbols in stark colors.Slaves, kidnapped and transported from West Africa to work in the sugarcane fields brought the  Yoruba religion to the island.
Often camouflaged under Christian Saint's names and symbols, the ancient African deities survived in "Santeria",the "way of the Saints", and are still very much alive and kicking! They are now called "Orishas" and demand respect and sacrifices from believers to grand what all gods in this planet are meant to grand:Health,Love and Wealth.

In front of the gates a wonderful collection of faces, representing the entire color palette of the Cuban people.
Back to the center of old Havana, horse drawn carriages take another group of children for a ride. It's their birthday, so they get to wear their finest and go around Havana for the best ice cream and lots of affection, toys and treats.

All around Havana, where the tourists like us hang out, duets or trios -sometimes whole orchestras-with guitars and drums will follow your every step singing ,until you give them a tip. After a couple of days, I swore never ever to listen to "Guantanamera" again in my life!!!
Latin music is everywhere. Various bands rehearse or perform in the streets, up on rooftops, in courtyards and squares. And when the music starts, nobody remains sitting for long. Old gentlemen and three year old todlers sway and turn and keep the beat and laugh.
Music and dancing (and flirting) is serious business in Cuba!

The highlight of that afternoon came as we were having the first mohito of the day in a posh cafe. The small orchestra was playing and the street-sweeping lady made sure everything was clean.
I couldn't take my eyes off of her head for obvious reasons :)
She wore her hybiscus and geranium flowers like an Ascot hat!

She suddenly stopped sweeping ,left her broom against the wall and started to dance to the music.Just for the heck of it. Just because she felt like it. Just because she couldn't resist the urge. She wasn't young, she wasn't a perfect dancer but she was beautiful and having such fun by herself, it was contagious!

After a little samba and some rumba, she picked her broom up and went on to chat with a friend round the corner. She was the epitome of the Cuban spirit: Bring the hardships on,as long as we are alive we will have fun and thank Heaven for what little wealth we have!!

The afternoon storm was right on time. Even under the heavy clouds Havana is beautiful and the colors sparkling. We headed back to our hotel, the Santa Isabela, a former governor's house.Next morning we took the plane to Sandiago de Cuba.
But that is another story ;)

Marrakesh is the second most renowned city of Morocco after legendary Casablanca. It is a tourist exotic playground with an interesting souk/market, the majestic red ochre Atlas mountain range close by and lots of things to see and do.
Hidden among the palm groves of the lush oasis Marrakesh once was, is one of the most beautiful gardens I've ever seen. It is much more than a garden. It is a work of art, the masterpiece of a French orientalist painter, Jacques Majorelle.(1886-1962)

The adventurous artist, fell in love with North Africa in 1919 and in 1924 he decided to settle down in Marrakesh. He bought ten acres in the outskirts of the city and began to plant his gardens with an impressive collection of 1.800 species of cacti, succulents, bamboos and 400 varieties of palm trees. He was one of the top plant collectors of his time.
What makes the garden unique is the vivid bright cobalt color Majorelle used to paint almost all surfaces he could get his hands on, including his house and atelier.
He went as far as to patent this cobalt blue as Blue Majorelle!

Majorelle used his garden and his house/workshop as a canvas. He painted walls, doors, latices, flower pots, rocks even the paths. His signature cobalt blue comes in stark contrast with an almost acidic yellow, warm pink, various shades of green, mustard and white.
The gardens are relatively small but the winding paths make them look and feel much bigger.

Jacques Majorelle lived peacefully in Marrakesh. He travelled further south into proper Africa, he painted, he married twice. In 1947 he opened his gardens to the public.
It seems he loved cars .He had two major car accidents, the second one cost him his life in 1962. After his death the gardens fell into neglect and barely survived. Then, in the early 80s Yves Saint Laurent bought a nearby villa and Majorelle Gardens. He lovingly restored them to their former glory and opened them again to the public.

So if you happen to find yourself in Marrakesh, hop on a horse drawn carriage and head for Les Jardins Majorelle.Early in the morning or late afternoon are the best times so you can have as much peace and quite as possible.

PS. Most of the photos-the spectacular details-are from the official site of The Majorelle Gardens. I couldn't find many of ours without our faces getting in way of the settings ;P

OK! I lied!!
I said in a previous post that we have no children...well,we do have a son! In Delhi. In one of the city's slums, hidden behind the posh villas and the shopping malls of the capital:
Cusumbur.

Vedani....our little boy made it to public school yea!!!

Even the taxi driver in Delhi didn't know where the slum was,but luckily we had the mobile of one of the people working to improve the lives of the lower caste Indians and especially women and children.
Cusumbur is one of the many slums in Delhi.
People here are poor farmers immigrating from other parts of India, like Bengal. They come to the capital to find jobs, but speaking a completely different dialect/language it is impossible for them to do anything better than clean houses -for the women (they earn 25 euros a month!!!) -or rummage through the landfill garbage mounts for men and children.
Children as old as 3 years work in the garbage...
And that's the most important of tasks:
Get the children out of the garbage mounts and into the school system.

I have to make it clear, we don't do "charity"! But this program, sponsored by ActionAid in Greece, is the kind that doesn't give people fish.It teaches them how to catch them.
We "adopted" Vedani by mail and some weeks later we received his picture and a drawing made by him. Well...we were in tears...
Some years later, when planning another trip to India (the no-visa-go-to-Nepal one) we made a point to visit Cusumbur and out little boy there.

Easier said than done. In Cusumbur, ActionAid supports a local group BVD,whose members include doctors and teachers.
The volunteers from "Bal Vikas Dhara" have first to convince parents to send their children to the preparatory classes in the slum, and then teach the children -who speak a totally different dialect than the Delhi one-to read and write.
Then and only then can these children start attending the normal classes in the nearest public school and so have a chance to progress in their lives.

Once a day a water tanker comes to Cusumbur
and everyone scrambles to get the daily supply of water
BVD also has programs to empower the community's women and to organize life in the slum. Working women have access to legal advise and help, they discuss their problems in groups, they tale turns keeping the slum as clean as possible.Women are at the fore front of all programs.

Before visiting Cusumbur we had been discussing what present we should buy for our boy.But-and I loved the reasoning of it-we were told that it was against BVD policy to give presents to just one child. So we bought colored crayons, candy and balloons for all the children in the preparatory school.

Walking through a slum was a shock. Classes were held in a room build of mud. No window. But when the older ones stood in the front and repeated for us their lesson/poem/calculus their faces were shining!
Our little boy, already wearing the public school uniform, counted to 50 in English!!!!
As instructed,we avoided paying too much attention to him, so as not to make other children feel less appreciated :] Before leaving we wanted to leave the BVD a donation, but they refused. The monthly contribution we payed through ActionAid for the community work was enough they said...Amazing people!!

I spend the next few days in Delhi explaining to my husband again and again why we shouldn't ...kidnap Vedana and half a dozen other kids from Cusumbur and bring them home with us lol
Since then Vedana has begun high school,he is learning English and is good at math -we get a report from his teacher twice a year ;)-many more slum children learn to read and write thanks to ActionAid and BVD.
